Joy pervaded Trieste’s “Rive” for the triumphant victory of the prodigious 19-year-old Ethiopian, Gemeda Ararso Negasa, who won the record with a time of 28’46”. The women’s race saw the supremacy of Kenya’s Caroline Makandi Gitonga (RUN2GETHER), who set a new course record and the best performance in Italy in 2023.
TRIESTE – Corri Trieste, the spectacular Fidal race put on by ASD Promorun in cooperation with the Municipality of Trieste and the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, reaches the milestone of its 20th edition, celebrated with a fantastic sunny day.
This edition marks eight exciting rides that will remain etched in the memory of the event. In the women’s segment, the best Italian performance on the 2023 road 10k and the race record is recorded. Present at the awards ceremony were Trieste’s Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Giorgio Rossi, Trieste’s Coni Delegate, Prof. Ernesto Mari, and Fidal President, Giacomo Biviano.
MALE RACE – An exciting struggle develops until the last moment. Gemeda Ararso Negasa won the triumph with a concluding time of 28’46”, edging out the runner-up, Celestin Ndikumana, by just one second. The two competed side by side for the entire course, but with a final sprint, Gemeda took his first victory in Italy. Bronze for Castor Omwelli Mogeni, from Kenya, with a time of 29’17”.
Yassine Rachik (FIAMME ORO), the fourth place finisher and first Italian, who finished in 29’28”, comments with a smile, “The race was good, for the 10k you need some speed. I am a little above my normal, but I am following the correct direction. Not in every race you can set a personal best, but with gradual goals you can achieve it. I am happy with my performance and the race.”
FEMALE RACE – Memorable and significant victory in the female category for Kenyan athlete Caroline Makandi Gitonga, with a time of 31’23”. “I am thrilled, I finally beat my personal best, the 32’02” from Turin 2019. It’s my fifth time in Italy, but I had never been to Trieste, this city is enchanting,” proudly declares the winner, who earned the gold medal a full 8 minutes ahead of the runner-up. Caroline Gitonga had already captured a 5000m in Milan in April. Second place went to Chiara Pianeta (TEAM KM SPORT), from Sicily but an adopted Triestine, with a time of 39’32”. She is followed by Antonella Sabatini (US ACLI MARATHON CHIETI) with 43’46”, completing the women’s podium.
