TRIESTE – Running and excitement, wellness, environment, tourism, culture, there are many binomials that are successfully married with this sport, but the one that is certainly the most noble of all is when running rhymes with solidarity. A commitment that ASD Promorun has made both directly and through the involvement of runners, and for the past two editions of the Corsa dei Castelli has found theBurlo Garofolo Hospital to be the perfect vessel.
A ceremony was held today, Feb. 23, to hand over the fruit of the solidarity collection, during which ASD Promorun President Silvia Gianardi entrusted the staff of the Burlo Garofolo Foundation with the proceeds from the donations of the 2022 Castles Race. A commitment, that of Promorun, which has been worth a total of €10,200 so far in the last two editions of the event.
“We care about our area and want to be messengers of solidarity projects “-said Silvia Gianardi, president of ASD Promorun. “On the occasion of the 5th Castles Run , we were able to get in touch with Dr. Gabriele Cont and become a means of spreading the word about a need in a very sensitive department. To contribute to the realization of projects of the Burlo Garofolo Hospital, excellence in pediatric care, is certainly a source of pride for us as well as an avenue through which to convey the love of sports, in turn a harbinger of well-being” added Silvia Gianardi. “Given the success of the first initiative, we decided to continue this collaboration by dedicating the fundraiser associated with the 6th Castles Run to another project, related to the Pediatric Emergency Room and under Dr. Alessandro Amaddeo. Today we are here to deliver the fruit of solidarity from Promorun events” concluded Silvia Gianardi.
Present at the lobby of the Burlo Garofolo Hospital, from where we then moved to the departments involved in the donation, the Dr. Cristina Verrone – I.O.C. Head of Corporate Rehabilitation Activities – Corporate Rehabilitation Service – ASUGI Health Directorate – Giuliano Isontina University Health Company, Dr. Paola Toscani – Burlo Garofolo Hospital Medical Director, Dr. Livia Bicego – Resp. Compartment, Dr. Laura Travan – Director Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Dr. Francesca Marrazzo – NICU Nurse Manager and Nurse Manager ff Pediatric PS, Dr. Alessandro Amaddeo – FF Pediatric Emergency Room, the Rep. Public Relations.
THE PROJECTS – CONSTANCE’SCORNER– The 5th Castles Run conveyed the solidarity project “Constance’s Corner – A Cuddle for Moms.” Constance is a baby girl who was born prematurely at an extremely low gestational age but whose warrior-like nature allowed her to survive after a three-month hospitalization, who became a testimonial for the #wearepremature initiative on World Prematurity Day 2021. The “Constance’s Corner – A Pampering for Moms” puts the spotlight on the attention and “care” of parental care within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, directed by Dr. Gabriele Cont, for the survival of premature infants. Along with a strong medical commitment there is an often little-known side, that of the complex and delicate task of mothers who must learn to manage the needs of babies born prematurely. “Constance’s Corner – A Pampering for Moms.” wants to support these mothers in their first approaches with their babies, trying to make them as comfortable as possible in the daily care of their “wrens” with the use of a device, produced and assembled by Elmi – Ambiente Funzionale – of Caldaro (BZ), consisting of an ergonomic Corian tray equipped with a pneumatic motor that regulates its height.
ASD Promorun joined the “I’m with Burlo” project through donating part of the proceeds from Family Run registrations and collecting athletes’ free donations at the time of registration.
Dr. Gabriele Cont, President of Burlo Garofolo Foundation: “The partnership with Promorun together with whom we promote sports as a tool for mental, physical and social health continues. Today we reap the first fruits and hope to continue and direct the proceeds of the solidarity collection to different departments of the Burlo Garofolo Hospital.”
Dr. Laura Travan, director of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), “It’s a day of great celebration, today we are inaugurating “Constance’s Corner” by which we focus on the needs of the family in a ward where both babies who are born prematurely and the parents of these babies need special attention“.
CHILD-FRIENDLY – The Covid era has also greatly altered hospital facilities, forcing departments to provide entrance and exit corridors. The Pediatric Emergency Room at the Burlo Garofolo Hospital, directed by Dr. Alessandro Amaddeo, has also undergone a remodeling as a result of which the reception areas designated for the youngest children have been removed. The absence of a play area, again for Covid-related reasons, has made the pathway facing young patients not child-friendly, making entry to the hospital more traumatic. The first fundraising task of the 6th Castles Run will be to decorate the walls of the reception areas of the Pediatric Emergency Room, a project that has found along its way the willingness of a great Teacher, the writer and cartoonist as well as daughter of Trieste Nicoletta Costa. His imagination is already at work studying the decorative design to be told along removable panels, in case of remodeling, of the areas dedicated to the Pediatric Emergency Room.
“We are very happy and grateful to receive this donation related to the Castles Run. I especially want to thank Promorun for deciding to commit to our children’s hospital again this year. I especially thank Silvia and the staff of ASD Promorun for their efforts. This year, thanks to the money raised, we will create wall decorations with drawings and games that will aim to reduce anxiety and negative experience for all children arriving in the ER. We believe that improving reception, creating a child-friendly environment, is part of our being a children’s hospital; a hospital that cares for the child and his or her family in the best way possible. The emergency department staff enthusiastically joined the race, aware of the importance of what will be done through this donation. Finally, I would like to thank artist Nicoletta Costa for deciding to be part of this project, which without her help would not have been possible.“
To supplement the project of welcoming children, part of the funds will go toward the purchase of special interactive tablets, to be used to alleviate the mental and physical trauma related to the invasiveness of some procedures. Last but not least, thanks to the proceeds of this project, it will be possible to equip the emergency room with a special database needed in case of poisoning, a life-saving tool that the hospital feels the need for on a daily basis because of the large number of toxic substances that children can come into contact with even within the home.
THE 2023 – ASD Promorun is already at work identifying the solidarity project to be carried out at the 7th Castles Race to be held on Sunday, October 15, starting from Miramare Castle and finishing at San Giusto Castle.
